Topologists are the mad lads of mathematics who think a coffee mug and a donut are literally the same thing. Why? Because both have exactly ONE hole (the handle loop = the donut hole). They study shapes based on what you can squish, stretch, and morph without tearing or gluing.
But here's where it gets bonkers: someone designed a mug where the handle connects BACK to the base, creating a continuous loop. To us normies, it's just a fancy mug with a weird handle. To a topologist? It's a sphere. Zero holes. Topologically equivalent to a ball. They've basically removed the "mug-ness" by closing that loop!
So yeah, topologists would look at your morning coffee vessel and be like "that's not even a mug anymore, that's just a sphere with a depression." Meanwhile, you're just trying to drink your coffee and wondering why mathematicians are like this.
