The Gatekeeping Is Real

Physics students know the ultimate mathematical lie! The small-angle approximation (sin θ ≈ θ) works beautifully in calculations... until it doesn't! 😱 Just like Pinocchio's nose growing when he fibbed, this approximation breaks down as angles get larger. Engineers and physicists quietly use this "close enough" trick all the time, then act shocked when someone points out it's technically wrong. The perfect math shortcut for when you're too lazy to punch sin(0.1) into your calculator! Next time your professor says "it's approximately equal," just watch their nose carefully! 👀

Mathematicians: "Creating absurdly specific formulas is totally useless." Also mathematicians: *proceeds to create the most needlessly complex formula in existence that solves a problem nobody asked about* This is pure mathematical masochism at its finest. Thirty years from now, some poor graduate student will stumble upon this formula, spend six months trying to understand it, only to realize it was created specifically to find numbers that satisfy arbitrary conditions no one cares about. The academic equivalent of building a rocket ship to fetch your mail.

Breaking mathematical news that would make Euclid spit out his coffee! This poor soul thinks they've cracked the Riemann hypothesis—one of math's most notorious unsolved problems—and "discovered" that 1705542 is prime. Plot twist: it's divisible by 2 (it's even!) and actually equals 2 × 852771. The Riemann hypothesis deals with the distribution of prime numbers and has stumped brilliant mathematicians for 160+ years, but sure, random Quora user, you solved it while everyone else was watching cat videos. The academic equivalent of announcing you've invented a perpetual motion machine using rubber bands and a potato.

Someone's having a mathematical meltdown! The joke here is that the top function is actually the famous Weierstrass function—a mathematical monster that's continuous everywhere but differentiable nowhere . Yet our overconfident hero has "differentiated" it anyway in the second line, which is mathematically impossible. It's like claiming you've found a dry path through the ocean. Karl Weierstrass wasn't being "stupid"—he was blowing mathematicians' minds in 1872 by proving such pathological functions could exist. This meme perfectly captures that student who thinks they're smarter than centuries of mathematical giants right before reality crushes their soul during office hours.

Oh, the infinite cruelty of mathematics! Between 0 and 1 lies an uncountably infinite set of real numbers. That's right - no matter how long you sit there listing decimals, you'll never finish. Not in a lifetime. Not in a billion lifetimes. This is basically the mathematical equivalent of asking someone to empty the ocean with a teaspoon. Even the most dedicated mathematician would just stare at you with the same horrified expression Chandler has here. Next time someone tells you math is just "basic numbers," show them this and watch their soul leave their body as they contemplate the concept of infinity.

Of course they ordered exactly 43 nuggets! Numberphile fans know that mathematicians don't just casually order food—they choose specific numbers with fascinating properties! 43 is prime, and prime numbers are like mathematical celebrities on Numberphile videos. The deadpan expression perfectly captures that moment when the McDonald's employee has no idea they're part of someone's mathematical universe. Meanwhile, the mathematician is probably already calculating the optimal arrangement of nuggets on the tray using some obscure theorem!
