The Four Stages Of Scientific Enlightenment

For those blissfully unaware, Grigori Perelman is the Russian mathematician who solved the Poincaré Conjecture—one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems worth a cool million dollars—and then promptly told everyone to shove their money and medals where the sun doesn't shine. He declined the Fields Medal (basically the Nobel Prize of math), refused the prize money, and went full hermit mode. So naturally, when people criticized his favorite mathematicians, questioned his ethics, or—heaven forbid—commented on his hair, they were basically asking for a one-way ticket to getting intellectually demolished by someone who operates on a plane of existence most of us can't even comprehend. The checkboxes are comedy gold because they capture every flavor of disrespect this man endured: plagiarism accusations (he literally proved something unsolvable for a century), interview spam (leave the man alone!), aesthetic judgments about his appearance (because that's what matters when you've revolutionized topology), and the audacity of people wanting him to solve MORE problems like he's some kind of mathematical vending machine. That final pledge at the bottom? *Chef's kiss.* Your apology better be as loud as your disrespect was—a lesson the entire internet could benefit from, honestly.

This meme perfectly captures the bizarre interdisciplinary politics of Nobel Prizes! In the top panel, giving a chemistry prize to a biologist is deemed "appropriate" because the fields have significant overlap (biochemistry is huge). The receptionist's sweet response shows how normalized this boundary-crossing has become. But award a physics prize to a computer scientist? EMERGENCY! The bottom panel's "inappropriate" label and frantic HR call reveal academia's hidden hierarchies. This happens more than you'd think - computational physics and quantum computing blur these lines constantly, yet the old guard clutches their pearls. The secret joke: these territorial disputes matter way more to academics than to actual scientific progress. Meanwhile, the rest of us are just waiting for someone to cure cancer or build a fusion reactor!

Just your typical day in the lab when the PI hired their friend's dog. Somehow managed to set up an impressive array of glassware despite lacking opposable thumbs. The colorful solutions suggest complex chemistry is supposed to be happening, but that vacant stare says otherwise. Every research group has that one team member who faked their way through the interview and now just nods during meetings while frantically Googling basic terminology. At least the safety glasses are properly worn.

The eternal struggle of math students everywhere! Batman Beyond (aka "Euler's Method") confidently shows up to solve differential equations, but our glowing skeleton villain is completely lost. "Do you have the slightest idea how little that narrows it down?" is basically every student trying to remember which numerical approximation technique to use on their calculus exam. There are like 50 different Euler methods—explicit, implicit, modified, improved, backward... The professor might as well have said "use math" as a hint. The panic is real when you're staring at that blank exam paper trying to remember if it's the one with the tangent lines or the one with the fancy error terms!

The periodic table's version of "find me a unicorn." Discovering an element between hydrogen (atomic number 1) and helium (atomic number 2) would literally break the fundamental laws of physics. It's like asking a mathematician to find a whole number between 1 and 2. That painful pause wasn't just awkward date silence—it was the sound of a chemist's soul leaving their body while contemplating whether to launch into a lecture on atomic numbers or just nod and hope the appetizers arrive soon. If someone actually managed this impossible feat, they'd need to book their flight to Stockholm immediately. The Nobel committee would have a collective aneurysm trying to comprehend how someone rewrote the entire foundation of modern chemistry.

The eternal struggle of every math student! The "Math Lecturer Starter Pack" perfectly encapsulates those professors who transform simple concepts into cryptic hieroglyphics. First, they hit you with a PDF full of squiggles that supposedly represent mathematical notation. Then come the ancient Greek symbols that make you question if you're studying math or classical literature. And don't forget the archaic language—"thus," "hence," and "shall"—because apparently modern English isn't sophisticated enough for derivatives. The confused cat face is literally every student after the professor proudly declares "and obviously this equals that" while pointing at an equation that looks like someone sneezed on the keyboard. Advanced mathematics: where "{} = {}" makes perfect sense to exactly one person in the room.
