Nothing quite like declaring a species extinct only to have it casually resurface in some remote rainforest, making you look like you jumped to conclusions. The ring-tailed glider and pygmy longfingered possum were both thought to be extinct until scientists in West Papua were like "hey, these guys are still here, just vibing."
This is what happens when you base extinction status on "we haven't seen it in a while" rather than "we've actually checked everywhere." To be fair, West Papua is incredibly remote and biodiverse, so these little marsupials had the perfect hiding spot. But still, imagine being the scientist who wrote the obituary for these species. Awkward.
Fun fact: These rediscoveries are called "Lazarus species" - organisms that reappear after being presumed extinct. Nature's way of saying "reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated" since 1859.
