Elephants swagger around with 20 p53 alleles - nature's ultimate cancer-fighting arsenal - while we humans pathetically clutch our single copy like it's the last french fry in the bag. No wonder elephants rarely get cancer despite living so long and having WAY more cells than us! The p53 gene is basically the cellular bouncer that kicks out mutated DNA before it causes trouble.
