The scientific flex here is actually legitimate - ice has a lower specific heat capacity than water (about half, in fact). This means it takes less energy to raise the temperature of ice by 1°C than it does for the same mass of water. So technically, heating ice to melt it and then boiling that water might be marginally more energy-efficient... if we ignore the whole phase change energy requirement. Which, spoiler alert, completely ruins this thermodynamic "shortcut." The latent heat of fusion would like a word with you.
