The Universe Is So Empty

During the 1957 Pascal-B nuclear test, a 900kg steel cap covering a test shaft was blasted off at an estimated 66 km/s (5x escape velocity). While historians calmly credit Sputnik as humanity's first space object, nuclear physicists are having an existential crisis knowing a random manhole cover might have been yeeted into interstellar space years earlier. The cover was never found—probably because it's somewhere between here and Alpha Centauri by now. Just another day in Cold War physics: turning infrastructure into accidental spacecraft since 1957.

Jupiter's got a serious case of planetary FOMO! In the top panel, Jupiter's all excited about hanging with Mars and the inner planets. But then Saturn shows up in the bottom panel, ready to literally embrace Jupiter - just like in mythology where Saturn (Roman equivalent of the Greek Titan Kronos) devoured his children! The title "Saturn Devouring His Son I Suppose" is a brilliant nod to Goya's disturbing painting, except instead of a horrific scene, we get this adorable pink blob Saturn about to hug Jupiter. The astronomical joke works on multiple levels since Jupiter IS Saturn's "son" in Roman mythology! Cosmic family drama at its finest! 🪐

Nothing says "I love you" like draining the joint checking account for a high-end telescope. That $15,070 Takahashi refractor isn't just a telescope—it's a relationship stress test with optical precision! The partner sees a financial catastrophe, but the astronomy enthusiast sees countless nights of stellar bliss. Sure, you could save for retirement or, you know, eat... but can retirement funds show you the Horsehead Nebula? The real question is which will last longer: the marriage or the warranty on that beautiful piece of astronomical engineering.

When your multi-billion dollar space program's solution to a Mars lander problem is basically "have you tried turning it off and on again but with a shovel?" That's peak engineering right there! The "enjenir" meme face perfectly captures that moment when you realize your fancy aerospace degree has prepared you to suggest the equivalent of percussive maintenance... but 140 million miles away. NASA engineers sitting in mission control like: "Trust me, I went to MIT for this specific solution."

Confusing astronomy with astrology in front of Carl Sagan? That's like telling Einstein you're really into "energy crystals" instead of relativity! The cosmic horror on poor Carl's face says it all. The man who brought us "billions and billions of stars" just heard his potential son-in-law say he's into zodiac signs and mercury retrograde! No wonder he's giving him 10 seconds to evacuate faster than light itself. The universe may be 13.8 billion years old, but this relationship lasted about 13.8 seconds!

Why settle for "you're hot" when you can tell someone they're as scorching as hydrogen nuclei fusing at 15 million degrees? Regular pickup lines are for amateurs. True intellectuals know that comparing someone's attractiveness to the thermonuclear processes happening inside Jupiter is the ultimate power move. Nothing says "I'm interested" quite like referencing stellar nucleosynthesis! Pro tip: If they understand your astronomical flirtation, they're definitely worth pursuing. If they don't... well, there are plenty of other celestial bodies in the universe.
