Round-bottom flasks (top) are the true heroes of the lab - they distribute heat evenly during reactions, prevent nasty "bumping" of boiling liquids, and fit perfectly with heating mantles. Meanwhile, those treacherous flat-bottom flasks (bottom) are just asking for thermal stress cracks and uneven heating. Real chemists know the struggle of watching a precious reaction crack and spill because someone grabbed the wrong glassware. No self-respecting synthesis would be caught dead in that flat-bottomed abomination!
