Biologists turning their backs on prokaryotic DNA to chase after plasmids is the microbial equivalent of a lab romance scandal! Plasmids are these tiny circular DNA molecules that exist separately from chromosomal DNA and can transfer between bacteria faster than gossip in a research department. They're basically the cool kids of the bacterial world - carrying antibiotic resistance genes and other genetic party favors. No wonder biologists are distracted! The chromosomal DNA is like "We've been together for billions of years and you're looking at THAT?!" Classic genetic homewrecker situation.
