The Same Thing With Potassium

The Same Thing With Potassium
Chemistry teachers love showing this reaction because it's basically controlled chaos in a beaker. When sodium (or potassium) meets water, it doesn't just dissolve politely—it throws an absolute tantrum. The alkali metals are so desperate to get rid of their outer electron that they'll literally rip apart water molecules to do it, releasing hydrogen gas in the process. The reaction is so exothermic that the hydrogen often ignites, creating that beautiful fireball you see in the bottom panel. Potassium is even MORE reactive than sodium, so when it hits water, it's like sodium's aggressive older brother showing up to the fight. The explosion is more violent, the flames are purple (thanks to potassium ions), and everyone in the lab takes three steps back. It's the kind of reaction that makes you understand why these metals are stored in oil—because they'd literally combust if they touched the moisture in air. Nature's spicy rocks!
