Anecdotes Memes

Every scientist at a party has lived this nightmare. Your friends are out here making sweeping generalizations about health, psychology, or whatever based on something their cousin's neighbor experienced once, meanwhile you're internally screaming about sample size (n=1 doesn't count, Karen!) and confirmation bias. The party trick version: staying calm while someone confidently declares universal truths from their extremely limited personal experience. The reality version: getting physically thrown out for mentioning statistical significance and proper experimental design. Scientists really are the fun police, but someone's gotta say it—anecdotes aren't data, no matter how compelling the story is. Pro tip: If you want to keep your friends, maybe don't bring up p-values at social gatherings. But also... they should really know better than to extrapolate from n=1. 🎉📊
