When molecular biologists name genes, they sometimes create unintentional comedy gold. Here we have the fucK gene from E. coli that encodes L-fuculokinase—an enzyme that phosphorylates L-fuculose. The gene naming system wasn't thinking about English profanity when creating this shorthand! Scientists have to maintain straight faces during presentations while discussing how they "isolated and characterized the fucK gene from E. coli ." Just imagine the suppressed giggles at conferences when someone has to announce they're "working on fucK expression."
